Fraunhofer Singapore Research - Our Trajectory

Fraunhofer Singapore’s local engagement - with its predecessor Fraunhofer Project Centre for Interactive Digital Media IDM@NTU - started in 1998 with a core research program focusing on providing cutting-edge research in immersive digital media visual computing. The core activities were complemented in 2017 by applied R&D in Advanced Microelectronics, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Resilience, and Quantum Technologies. These new area domains became the main focus areas for Fraunhofer Singapore in 2022.

Fraunhofer Singapore was initially a project centre for Interactive Digital Media (Fraunhofer IDM@NTU) in 2010, a pioneer in Singapore’s applied research scene, driven by the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD) in Darmstadt, Germany.

Founded in 2017, Fraunhofer Singapore Research Ltd (FSR) was launched by NTU and Fraunhofer IGD, supported by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) as part of the International Research Centres (IRC@SG) landscape in Singapore.

From 2022 our strong engagement continues with partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC).

In 2023, Fraunhofer Singapore expanded its research portfolio with a strategic partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS). This collaboration strengthens expertise in advanced microelectronics, sensors, and system testing and reliability, providing new opportunities for innovation in areas such as smart systems and technologies.

Fraunhofer Singapore and its strategic partnership with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) carrying on research in the field of Advanced Microelectroncis, Cybersecurity, Resilience and Secure Quantum technologies.

In 2025, Fraunhofer Singapore with FSR@NTU as hosting hosting became an official NRF CREATE partner. This new milestone further anchors Fraunhofer within Singapore’s national research ecosystem and extends the collaborative R&D landscape between Germany and Singapore.

Fraunhofer Singapore is positioned to build a hub for joint innovation across academia, industry, and government, building stronger bridges between Geramany and Singapore in fields such as cybersecurity, quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and advanced microelectronics and others.
